Consistent wake time
Summary
- Keep a wake time that allows enough sleep. Go to bed when sleepy, without lying awake to fit an earlier alarm.
- Get daylight by day and limit bright light at night. Ongoing insomnia needs a fuller treatment plan.
Ways to apply
Wake at a set time, but wait for sleepiness at night
Research-backed
Adult insomnia guidelines pair waking at the same time every day with going to bed only when sleepy. A consistent wake time does not mean going to bed early and lying awake, waiting for sleep(Edinger et al., 2021).
Light at different times can shift sleep in opposite directions
Research-backed
The US National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute advises getting daylight during the day and reducing artificial light at night. In clinician-directed light therapy, morning light is used to shift sleep earlier, while early evening light is used to shift it later. Bright light at night cannot replace morning light(National et al., 2022).
Ongoing sleep difficulties call for a fuller plan
Research-backed
A trial in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) found that a combined program improved sleep. It included professional consultations, sleep logs and behavioral strategies tailored to each child’s difficulties. The result reflects the whole program, rather than the effect of a consistent wake time alone(Hiscock et al., 2015).
Guidelines for chronic insomnia in adults also recommend cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, which combines several methods. Persistent insomnia calls for reviewing sleep logs and a complete plan with a doctor, rather than setting the alarm ever earlier(Edinger et al., 2021).
